by Carleen Wild Moody County Enterprise It is back to the books for students throughout Moody County. Flandreau Indian School was the first to welcome residents back into the dorms this past week and to class last Wednesday. Flandreau Public Schools kicked off the school year on Monday of this week and Colman-Egan on Tuesday. While it is getting tougher, school officials say, to fill some of the vacant teaching positions given a current shortage of people entering into or remaining in the profession — everyone reports being at or near full-staff. Flandreau Indian School remains fairly closed due to extra precautions with COVID, so no new teachers or staff were needed. At Flandreau Public, 18 new certified or administrative staff have been hired with open positions remaining only for paraprofessionals. Colman-Egan Schools are introducing 10 new teachers and staff for the 2022-23 school year. Each of the administrators say that they are excited about the year ahead and the energy everyone seems to be coming back with. Flandreau and Colman-Egan report being in the “green” phase for COVID precautions, which means that both schools will operate basically as if it were a ‘normal’ year — but if someone is sick and does test positive, they will need to stay out of school for five days. They can then return to school but they will need to wear a mask for the next five days as long as they are symptom free.
